Project Description:

The project started with a simple brief: Make an office for a railway contracting company.

Upon talking to the jubilant and young client representing his father’s business, we decided Hilsa was more than just a contracting company. Using earthy tones representative of materials found on construction sites, forms representative of contouring landscapes and repetitive datums seen quite Location: Salt Lake, Kolkata commonly in railway tracks, we setout to design this quaint but beautiful abode for Hilsa Enterprises. Nestled in the 19th floor of Imagine Techpark, amidst the hustle and bustle of Sector V, Salt Lake, we find ourselves drawn to the rather monolithic entry of Suite 7. Upon entering into the space, we are greeted with harsh forms of basalt stone carved into a reception area alongside a comforting settee made of plush fabric. The contrast between the harsh basalt stone with the cool tones of the fabric and the paint presents the very dichotomy of the Indian Railway contracting industry. As we proceed further in, we are greeted with a large conference room on the left and an open office area on the right. Any rail meetings involve multiple personnel so having a large conference room was an absolute requirement. Being a family owned business we provided the client with separate chambers for his father and himself to give them the privacy and freedom from each others work.
